Rhetorical Devices

Time to continue my sharing from the Jakarta Post's Writing Workshop. The second session is about Rhetorical Devices, very useful for people who want to make their writing stronger. There are many rhetorical devices, such as simile, alliteration, tricolon, etc. If you remember your Bahasa Indonesia classes from high school, you'll remember the lessons about "majas", right? This is kinda similar with that.

For the assignment, the coach asked us to submit an article that has at least 3 different rhetorical devices. Here's mine below. Can you spot the rhetorical devices?

Why I Fight the iPad

Kids who are raised in the digital age do not understand how it feels to be a gaptek (gagap teknologi – or technology illiterate). They seem to be equipped by a sixth sense for technology related stuff: they know exactly the differences between touch screen phones and the ones with keypads, they can adjust easily with new gadgets, and they usually can find the best shortcuts or tricks in our phone- long before we even knew that they existed.

My 4,5 years old son amazed me every time he played with his iPad. Beating my score in Temple Run, sailing easily through the dead end levels in Candy Crush, or showing me the ways how to play Angry Birds correctly. I watched with mixed feelings when his fingers moved across the screen, like a cheetah chasing his prey.

I realized that nowadays iPad has played a huge role in children’s education and brain development. A study conducted at Longfield Academy in Kent, England, showed positive impacts of the iPad when being used as educational tool for students and teachers. The study mentioned that iPads have revolutionized teaching and encouraged collaborative learning.

Meanwhile, some companies like Vivity Labs had launched scientifically designed brain-training games to help develop children’s brain. One of the games, Sparky’s Adventures, has Parent’s Corner that gives parents insight into how their kids’ brains are developing while playing the games.

But besides all the glitters, can iPad really replace the green scenery and the fresh air? Or the pleasure of playing outside with your friends, socializing with real people? I don’t think so.

If you grew up before the 90s, I’m pretty sure you still remember the beauty of playing outdoor with your friends. I remember vividly my excitement every time I walked outside my house and anticipated a long, fun afternoon. Playing tag with the neighbor kids and fishing in the nearest pond and riding bicycle and exploring the neighborhood. The joy that my son, along with so many kids out there, missed a lot these days.

I noticed that my son spent so much time indoor, glued into his iPad screen, and only spent little time outdoor socializing with his friends. Every time I had prepared other activities for him, iPad always allured him to find some excuses to check on it. Even more unbelievable is whenever we have a playdate with other kids, they keep on busy playing (or exchanging) iPads! And this is when I finally declared my war against the iPad.

The first time I tried to separate my son with his iPad, it was so hard. He’s furious: kicking, screaming, wailing. I’ve developed a schedule that limits his time playing with iPad. Homework first, then he can play for 30 minutes. On weekends, I prepared outdoor activities for him, from swimming lessons to museum trips and biking in Car Free Day. Anything that can separate him with his iPad, even only for a while.

Of course it’s not easy. Another day, another battle, another drama. My son still asks for his iPad every time he doesn’t have interesting thing to do, or if he sees other kids playing with their iPads. Moreover, I know that sometimes, when I was busy with works or had to catch up with something else, I was the one who’ve been tempted to pull out the iPad from its hiding place and give it to my son so he wouldn’t disturb me.

But gradually, the effort works. Last week I accompanied him to his swimming lesson and he didn’t want to come out from the pool even though his lesson was already over. And the last time we met with my brother’s kids, the children were playing football instead of being busy with their gadgets. It’s relieving to see kids having fun outside and laughing out loud for a change.

I agree that it’s impossible to eliminate the role of gadgets in this digital era. And like other gadgets, iPad has its own perks and positive traits. But I’m glad to say that although the iPad still becomes a part of our lives, its grip is not as strong as before and my son is less dependent on it.

It is indeed good news but with the school holiday just around the corner, I know the challenge is not over yet. And my fight will continue- maybe for many years to come.

Yay or Nay?

1. Religious schools
Is it better to enroll your kids in religious schools instead of some international/universal (non religious) schools? I studied in Christian and Catholic schools all my life, and I was thinking to do something different with my son, giving him different environment. But turned out, Christian and Catholic schools are the ones that will accept students who were born in odd months like October or November (other schools suggest us to wait for another year). So I guess I will have to reconsider my options. Strong based of religions might be good, but I would also like my kid to have more diverse environment, and know many kind of people. Hmmm..dilemma, dilemma.

2. Being friends with your ex(es)
Is this something that people do because they want other people see them as the "cool ones"? Oh yeah, we hung out together last night. Me, my husband, my ex and his new girlfriend. Is it true, that you could forget everything that has happened in the past and start a new kind of relationship without any baggage left behind? From boyfriend to bestfriend, is it possible?

3. Having another kid
Yep.. this has been a dilemma for quite some time now. I have lost count of how many people asking me the sacred question "Jadi kapan nambah lagi?" Because hey, who said that having more than one kid (or, having a kid at all) is mandatory? It's a choice. But sure, lots of great things coming from having more than a child. The more, the merrier. I have known a US Professor who said to me once, "The best thing you can give your kid is a sibling". Awww...really??

4. Getting a PhD
Is PhD for everyone? I admire my mom who could still obtain a PhD in her 50s. Even me, in my 30s, doesn't have that much energy! Well, I had my master's degree and it is quite an accomplishment for me. But yeah, sometimes I was wondering am I a PhD material? I'd rather do another master's than plunge into 4 or 5 years of research. I always thought myself as a more horizontal person than a vertical. I got bored easily, I love to do many different things. But still, a dreamy cloud of PhD still hanging right there close to my head.

5. Living far from family
This is my neverending dilemma. I would really love to live in another place right now, having a whole new adventure. But to think of going away from my big, fat, chaotic family, had always made me sad. It scared me to death if I have to receive a bad news about my family when I am faraway from home. I just got back from Bangkok the other day for a conference. And I remember how bad I felt when I heard that my Dad was hospitalized when I was away. It broke my heart to think that something could happen when I was not there - although of course anything could really happen anytime. But still.

So what do you think of my dilemmas? Are there more yays than nays?

Free Malling

5. Free shows
Selain show reguler, tiap mall sering menawarkan show-show khusus terutama di musim liburan sekolah (Juni-Juli atau Desember). So far, gue pernah mengajak Yofel melihat show Spongebob dan Thomas di Central Park, Spiderman di Senayan City, juga Sea World (lengkap dengan touch pool dan aquariumnya) di Citraland Mall. Kelemahannya?

After the show- bisa elus-elus si Thomas =)

6. Every little thing...

Perfect Life

"I won't ever, ever do that to my son", that's what I thought when I saw a mother yelling at her crying son in the middle of a parking lot.

"I will be spending my time teaching my kid to love books, to play outside..to be the coolest mom ever!!", that's what I told myself when I held my son in the hospital after he was born.

Perfect mom, perfect model, perfect life.

How did I know that there will be days when I don't feel like doing anything - except sleeping or reading my book?

How did I know that there will be times when I just don't have the patience to deal with my son's tantrum - and yelling at him is the only thing I can think of?

How did I know that there will never be the coolest mom - because even though you're cool for now, still there are days that your son simply doesn't want to talk to you, and you become his worst enemy =)

How did I know that there is no such thing as a perfect mom, let alone a perfect life?

But now I know.
Thank goodness, now I know =)

Go Public

Time flies so fast!!! Yofel is almost 3 years old, and we decided it's time for him to go to school!! =)

eating biscuit, a very big achievement!

I didn't do too much research about which is the best school for Yofel. There is one good preschool in our apartment, only 12 floors down and a couple of steps away, so it's easiest for Yofel to be enrolled in that school. The lessons are in English, but there's Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia lessons as well, so we're pretty content about it.

First day of school, I was really nervous, I guess more nervous than Yofel himself. It's that bittersweet feeling, when you know there's a new era to face, but you don't want to lose the old one yet. Watching him wearing his brand new uniform and playing with other kids...there are things that are indeed still priceless in this pricey material world.

But at the same time, I also realized one important thing. Enrolling your kid into a school means your parenting stuff and kids problems becoming public. It suddenly becomes everybody's business, from the teachers at school to the other parents and kids in the class.

I remember the horrifying feeling when Yofel, who is still a picky eater and hates eating more than anything else, refused to sit down around the table with the other kids to have snack time. Instead of munching the biscuit and sitting with other children, Yofel kept screaming, kicking around and finally throwing the plate (luckily, a plastic plate) toward his teacher!

Embarrassment, fear and tears welled up in my heart (and eyes!), but I tried to hide it all. The teacher calmed me down and said that every kid needs time to adjust in new environment, so I don't need to be worried. Same thing happened when Yofel running around the class when the other kids singing and dancing. The alarming thing was that some of the kids were following him running around, and I tried to keep my face as innocent as possible when their parents looking at me.

But truth is, all the worrying and feeling afraid for Yofel seemed worth it when I heard from his nanny that Yofel is now starting to eat with his friends, or participating in singing and dancing in class, even he was willing to come forward as a volunteer to do the rote count.

Proud.

A feeling that is indeed, more priceless than anything.

Like his teacher once said to him, "Good job, Yofel!"

Tentang Parenting (LAGI??)

Dan who knows? Sometimes, parents know best. But still, children have their own thinking, living their own life.

Merelakan. Melepaskan. Dan mendoakan. Bukan memiliki, apalagi mengatur hidup anak gue.

Ujian terkecil datang setelah libur tahun baru kemarin. Without nanny. Without us. And it's damn difficult at first!

But turned out, everything's going well. Yofel emang susah makannya (but he's a picky eater anyway, doesn't matter who watched for him), kadang bertanya-tanya di mana mama, papa atau ncus. Tapi toh, he lives! And we live too =)

Jadi...dua puluh tahunan lagi, harusnya kita siap dong ya melepas dia? Merelakan dia memilih jalan hidupnya? (yea, rite!!!!)

Expect the Unexpected

Sooo..if there's someone asking me what do I learn since I became a mom, probably I would answer: I learn to expect the unexpected. Of course every parent will have high expectations on their children. Healthy, happy, smart and successful. That's totally normal. But sometimes, we just have to accept things as what they are.

I wanted to breastfeed Yofel until he's 2 years old, but unfortunately, I couldn't do it. So many things happened, so many choices had to be made, and eventually we gave him formula. Was it the end of the world? Maybe for some time, it felt like it was. But when I look back at that time now, I can smile and think ,"Well, we have survived, he's healthy and happy and I love him more everyday!"

I wanted Yofel to stay on his car seat everytime we went with car. But for several reasons, we had to give up our car when Yofel was less than 1 year old, and we started to travel by taxi, or by joining someone's car. So we had to say goodbye to the car seat, and well..accept the fact that it doesn't mean the end of the world either =D

I was also dreaming that Yofel will be very easy with eating his food. He will eat everything, from Indonesian food to Middle East one if necessary. He will be very adaptive even if we have to travel to Alaska. But the fact is totally different than my dream! Yofel is a very very very picky eater, not only he doesn't want to eat Mediteranian food (oh well, I can live with this, hehe), he can't even chew his food properly! He's choking and vomiting every time we gave him real solid food. Fried rice? Baked potato? Some fancy quiche? Out of questions.

Sometimes I just want to give up. Sometimes everything seems so difficult. Sometimes I don't have enough patience to deal with all of this. And I could only look at the kids on the next table in the restaurant with full envy. They eat everything!!! Sometimes even in the high chair!! Oh my goodness. God I want that happens on my table so much!!!

But then again, I think I've learned the lessons. I remember when I waited anxiously for Yofel's teeth to show up. And not until he's over 9 months old that miracle happened =D And what about when he kept on crawling until he's one year old? And how happy I was when suddenly, out of the blue,he looked at me with his smiling face, stood up on his two feet, and walked. Just like that!

So I think God does make everything beautiful in His time. I learn to expect the unexpected, and accept the unacceptable. And yet I am very grateful for the lessons Yofel gave me throughout these years.

Happy birthday, my curly boy. These past two years were the most wonderful time in my life =) I love you.

Losing Your Identity?

Menurut gue, bukan kehilangan identitas, tapi justru menambahkan satu keping identitas baru di tengah puluhan identitas kita yang lain (karyawan?anak buah?saudara perempuan?kutubuku? you name it).

Well, as long as you don't live your life through your children's, then it's fine. But when you start to replace your life with your children's life, then you are welcome to worry =D

For Parents in Need: The Urban Mama Indeed!

The Urban Mama Writing Contest

I am not a person with motherly instincts. I love kids, but I've never dreamed to have lots of them since I was a child. I love playing with children, but I know nothing about raising a child on my own, or even doing a simple task like changing diaper or feeding a baby.

So, I was very-very clueless when I was pregnant and finally have my own baby Yofel (yep, not a nephew who I could give back to his parents if he started to get naughty!). I read several books about pregnancy and parenting, but still, so many questions unanswered and so many things I need to ask.

My curiosity led me to internet (of course!) and I stumbled to many websites, blogs, and mailing lists. Some could answer my questions, but some made me feel more isolated and guilty than ever. I couldn't give Yofel ASI Exclusive, and to read many negative comments about formula and bottle feeding made me feel really sad and bad about myself.

Then one day, a friend of mine mentioned a forum I never heard before: The Urban Mama. A bit sceptical at first, but I thought, ok, let's give it a try. And wow! I'd mesmerized of its tag line: There is always a different story in every parenting style. I totally agree with this!

And since that day, The Urban Mama became my saviour. I learned A LOT about many things, from breastfeeding to Baby Led Weaning, from traveling with infants to choose a recommended baby bottle. Ok, there's one tiny bad point from this wonderful forum: It brought out the shopaholic in me! Hahaha, I found out many cute brands that I've never known before, from baby stroller to diaper bag, and it makes me craving for more shopping! =)

At first, I only became a silent reader of The Urban Mama. I'm not a fan of internet forum, and I feel a bit uncomfortable to share my problems or stories with people I don't know. But when Yofel had his colic problem, I had no idea what should I do, and decided it's time to seek an advice from the amazing parents of this amazing forum. And what a surprise when I found out that many people actually answered my questions! They shared their stories, gave advice, and offered support. Imagine, these people whose faces I didn't even know! I felt warmth inside my heart, and quickly became an active member of the forum. I remembered how great it felt when you got support from other people, so even though I didn't have solutions for every problem, at least I tried my best to offer support and comfort, by writing an article or dropping some lines in the forums. I also recommended The Urban Mama to all my friends who are parents and parents-to-be. And although I only got a chance to join the kopdar once, I still feel as a proud member of The Urban Mama: I'm a TUMbler! =)

The Urban Mama is not only helping me to solve everyday problems as a parent (from parenting to financial tips!), but it taught me about the most principal thing in parenting (more important than ASIX, IMD, RUM, BLW or other abbreviations): Respect.

Parenting is about respecting other people's choices, because there is always a different story in every parenting style. And hopefully, one day we can teach our kids to do the same in their future.

Happy 1st anniversary, The Urban Mama, I wish you more fruitful years to come! (And a big thanks for the founding mamas: Shinta, Thalia and Ninit, and all the crew. Keep up the great job!)

Chaos

Waking up in the morning, hoping to play a bit with your kid before going to the office. What seemed like a simple wish apparently led into a crazy day. Your kid had accidentally dislocated his hand while rolling on the bed, and suddenly everything was a chaos.

Your babysitter suddenly had diarrhea, and your kid was crying out loud. Your apartment looked very messy, and all you want to do is going back to sleep, pretending that this was just a bad dream.

But sadly, you opened your eyes and everything was still a mess.

What can you say? This is what people called being a parent. And it's not an easy job, at all.

*dedicated to my baby boy, who's no longer a baby. Happy first bday, and we love you no matter what! (wait for my post about the bday party!)

Parenting....

Parenting is not all about giving ASI exclusive or home made MPASI,
it's about nourishing your kids with unconditional love.

Parenting is not about "breastfeeding my baby to have a great bonding with him",
it's about how to open the communication door with him for the rest of your life.

Parenting is not just about choosing natural birth and IMD,
It's about giving them the best in education and health.

And the most important thing is..
Parenting is not about judging other people's choices.
It's about respect others. And teaching your kids to do the same in their future.

*dedicated to all parents out there. keep on fighting, don't bother what people say.

Working Mum

One of the hardest decisions I've ever made was to get back to work again after spending so many beautiful moments with my boy as a stay at home mom. I've never realized how priceless it is to look at baby yo's face whenever I want to, or to hold him tight every time I want to express my feeling for him.
Now, I become one of the working mums, just like my mum when I was growing up. It's tough, because everytime I miss him, I couldn't just go to his room and playing with him. The only way to lighten my mood is looking his photos in my facebook page...

I never knew how hard it is to leave your child in the house, even though only for 8 hours. Suddenly, you just don't care about the carrier path anymore, about the overtime, the business trips...The only thing you want to do is coming home early, to catch up with your little one, playing with him before he falls asleep.

And I promise myself, if I have a choice, I would take a different way. Really I would.

Almost Four Months!

Yap, almost four months since baby Yofel came to our life...Gimana rasanya?

Poin terpenting yang gue pelajari adalah, there will always be comparisons. Jadi, please...jangan memaksakan pendapat kita, because if it worked out for you, that doesn't mean it will work out for everybody.

Oke. This is a big lesson for me.

Semua ibu pasti pengen bayinya sehat.

Nggak dijudge. Tingkat kejijikkan gue mencapai klimaksnya waktu gue membaca sebuah postingan di salah satu blog yang bilang : Kalau anak manusia, ya minumnya ASI. Kalau dikasih susu formula itu namanya anak sapi!

Gosh.

It's not about mom's ego, but about baby's health! Sebaliknya, I love her more and more each day, especially because now I learn how hard it is to become a mom!

Glenn Doman hanyalah salah satu metode. The bottom point is, sampai nanti anak kita besar, jangan sampai mengambil keputusan berdasarkan apa yang kita pikir terbaik menurut kita, tapi berpikirlah juga apa yang terbaik untuk mereka.

Masih banyak sih pengalaman aneh-aneh selama gue menjalani peran ibu beberapa bulan ini, dan gue yakin masih akan sangat banyak tantangan yang gue hadapi, orang-orang aneh yang akan gue temui (especially them, whose blogs and websites and mailing lists I banned for the time being! hehehe).

Enjoy motherhood, don't make everything difficult for yourself =) And when you think you've had enough, just look into your baby's face. Suddenly, everything turns just fine all over again.

On Being a Parent

I always love being an aunt. I have two gorgeous nephews, Matthew, almost 5 years old, and baby Christian, just 2 months old. Being an aunt means you could be the fun person for your nephews, without actually taking a full responsibility to raise them. You could bring them to fun places, buy them funky gifts, and play with them whenever you like it. And when they become more and more naughty, or cranky. you could just send them back to their parents! =)

But being a parent, was something that didn't really match my personality. I never had too much motherly instinct, and when I was a little girl, I didn't have a passion to be a mom or have many kids in the future..

So this is a very new experience for me..I don't know anything about being a parent. I couldn't even change a diaper or hold a baby in the right way! I always in panic mode when my son cries, and I even have a chill every time I call myself Mom. This is totally weird!

But who knows, I actually enjoying my new role as a Mom. Though I still don't have a courage to bath my son, and I couldn't sooth him every time he screams, I started to feel comfortable with this new chapter of my life. I never thought that I could bring myself up at 2 am, while I know that I'm not a morning person at all. Or, how I like to smell minyak telon on his body, when I know that I hated the smell so much before!

True, many criticisms are still on my way. Here are some examples:
Q: What do you give your son? Full ASI?
Me: No, I mix it with formula...
Q: Why?? ASI is the best for baby, you know. At least until 6 months, you should give your baby ASIX (aka ASI exclusive).
Me: I don't produce enough for him.
Q: How do you know? You should try first. He'll be more healthy, clever, and not easily get sick.
Me: But I tried and it's not enough.
Q: Have you tried eating daun katuk? Or kacang hijau? And drink much milk?
Me: I tried all..But its okay, I think formula is also fine for him..
Q: But it's a pity, you know...
Me: ...

Well, it's only one example of how I have to explain my way of raising my kid. Not mentioning the questions about why I hired a babysitter to help me, or why we used disposable diapers, or why I didn't shave my baby's hair when he's turn 40 days old, or why I brought my baby to Bandung although he was just 1 month old... And still many more!

At first, I was very distressed to have so many questions and criticisms pointed at me. Some of the people were being nice, just gave me ideas and suggestions. But others, argh!!! Just a bunch of annoying people with neverending questions.

But now, I try to just let them say whatever they want. This is my son, my kid, my flesh and blood. I think it's me and my guy's right to choose whatever we feel best for him. Every parent wants the best for their baby, right?

ps: and it's sooo very precious experience for me, to watch my guy holding our baby, playing with him and cherishing every moment they have. Especially, when I know that my guy was not a fatherly figure at all, and didn't like children! (although I still couldn't persuade him to change the diapers, yet! haha...)

A Miracle Was Born

Selasa, 6 Oktober 2009: Masih jalan-jalan, beresin kerjaan kantor, kontrak udah mau abis...

Ups. Padahal due gue masih sekitar minggu depan...Setelah diperiksa dalam, ternyata gue belum ada pembukaan sama sekali. Susternya bilang, kita tunggu sampai siang, kalau belum ada kemajuan, terpaksa diambil tindakan. Tindakan apa? tanya gue dengan cemas. Mungkin induksi, jawab si suster dengan tenang. Waks!

Frustrasi gue semakin memuncak.

7.30 pm: bukaan satu!

10 pm: bukaan dua!

12 am: bukaan empat!

1 am: bukaan lima, dan frustrasi gue mencapai titik tertinggi. Apalagi waktu si suster (yang sudah berganti shift sampai 4 kali sejak gue pertama kali masuk rumah sakit) bilang, kita liat 3 jam lagi ya, kalau belum ada kemajuan, mungkin harus diambil tindakan. What? 3 jam? Tindakan apa lagi???

Sampai akhirnya,

2.10 am: Ayo!! Udah keliatan rambutnya tuh!

dan akhirnya, 2.11 am: Sesosok bayi dibaringkan di dada gue, diiringi rasa takjub luar biasa. A miracle was born.

Jadi, apakah melahirkan itu sakit? Apakah gue kapok punya anak lagi?
Gue nggak tau jawaban pastinya, tapi satu yang bisa gue omongin adalah: it's all worth it, to the tiniest part.

And let me introduce you to our miracle, Joshua Octavian Yofel Souisa.
